Proton Will Re-Interview Some Staff About AI Use as Part of a Review That May Affect Continued Employment, 404 Media Reports

Summary

Proton, maker of ProtonMail, told staff it will re-interview some employees about how they use AI, according to a leaked email obtained by 404 Media. The email says the review may lead to changes in roles, responsibilities and continued employment.

Proton, the company behind ProtonMail and other privacy-focused products, told staff on Monday, Oct. 26, 2026, that it will re-interview staff across the company, though not everyone, about how they use AI in their jobs, according to an internal email obtained by 404 Media. 404 Media reports the email carries the implication that the interviews may decide whether staffers keep their jobs. Proton did not immediately respond to 404 Media's request for comment.

What the email says

"These re-interviews are consequential," part of the email reads, as quoted by 404 Media. It continues: "Interviewers will document their assessments, which will inform the broader review of our organization and talent. That review may lead to changes in roles, responsibilities, and continued employment. Individual outcomes will be communicated directly once decisions are finalized."

The email says the company needs people who "can translate AI's capabilities into better products, stronger execution, and new ways of working," and who approach the change with curiosity, judgment and urgency, according to 404 Media's quotation.

How the process is set up

The email says not everyone in the company will be re-interviewed, and that any decisions affecting an employee's employment will be communicated separately, per 404 Media. Interviewers will come from outside the staff member's own team and reporting line. People may be interviewed by someone from "a pool of leaders who demonstrate strong AI capability and have aligned on the assessment criteria," the email says. The email says the re-interviews will take place between Nov. 4 and Nov. 11.

The email also says Proton's chief executive, Andy Yen, "interviewed more than 40 senior leaders across Engineering and Product to begin this process." 404 Media reports those interviews are now extending across the company.

The email acknowledges the uncertainty it creates for staff. "We recognize that this process creates uncertainty. We will be clear about what has been decided and what remains open, and communicate individual outcomes as soon as we can," it reads.

Background on Proton's AI push

404 Media reported that Yen has steadily pushed the company toward more AI use, including by launching AI-centered products such as Lumo, a privacy-focused chatbot.

What is not established

The excerpts 404 Media published do not say how many employees will be re-interviewed, what the assessment criteria are, or whether job cuts are planned. The email says only that the review "may" lead to changes in roles, responsibilities and continued employment. Proton had not commented on the email when 404 Media published its report, and Bot Mutiny has not seen the full email or independently verified it.
